There are several things to keep in mind when aiding someone experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure.<\/p>\n<h2>Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23669&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DO stay with the person.<\/span> Be calm and reassure them that they will be alright. Time the seizure. If it lasts more than four minutes, or you know or suspect this is the person\u2019s first seizure, or the person injured themselves falling or convulsing, call 911. You can also check to see if the person has a rescue medicine on them \u2013 typically a nasal spray. <span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DON\u2019T panic<\/span>, leave, or try to restrain the person.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23663&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DO move away any sharp or hard objects<\/span> the person could bump into while seizing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23667&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DON\u2019T try to hold the person down or place anything in their mouths<\/span> (it is a myth that people can swallow their tongues during seizures).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23666&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DO gently roll the person onto their side <\/span> to help them breathe, and place something soft and flat like a folded jacket under their head. <span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DON\u2019T try to perform CPR<\/span> or give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23664&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]When the seizure has ended, <span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DO stay with the person<\/span> until they are alert and know where they are and what has happened. Offer reassurance that you will be there until they are alright. Ask questions such as \u201cWhat is today\u2019s date?\u201d to make sure they are no longer confused. You may check to see whether seizures are a known condition and if they need further medical care.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;23668&#8243; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 900;\">DON\u2019T immediately leave<\/span> or try to give them water or food until they are fully alert.
