Prioritizing mental health care is crucial, and the good news is there are several resources available that specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can experience mental health challenges \u2014 and that is especially true for members of marginalized groups such as the LGBTQIA+ community. Mental health struggles can manifest itself differently in each person, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Panic attacks<\/li>\n<li>Anger<\/li>\n<li>Paranoia<\/li>\n<li>Disordered eating<\/li>\n<li>Insomnia<\/li>\n<li>Drug or alcohol abuse<\/li>\n<li>Self-harm<\/li>\n<li>Suicidal feelings or ideation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2022\/12\/lgbt-adults-report-anxiety-depression-at-all-ages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s<\/a> experimental Household Pulse Survey (HPS), \u201cRegardless of age, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults have consistently reported higher rates of symptoms of both anxiety and depression than non-LGBT adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Minority Stress<\/h4>\n<p>Identifying as part of the LGBTQIA+ community doesn\u2019t cause mental health struggles, but rather they form around the experiences of discrimination, stigma, isolation, exclusion, and rejection.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jennifer Vencill, a psychologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/the-importance-of-prioritizing-mental-health-for-the-lgbtq-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Mayo Clinic<\/a> that anxiety, depression, stressors and family relationships are often heightened for \u201cthe LGBTQ community because of their marginalized sexual and gender identities.\u201d This is termed minority stress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhanational.org\/issues\/lgbtq-communities-and-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental Health America<\/a>, the nation\u2019s leading national nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health, cited a study<sup>1<\/sup> that found \u201cLGBTQ+ people used mental health services at 2.5 times higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!-- Call out--><\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #c98429; border-radius: 25px; padding: 20px; margin: 15px;\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: white;\">June is Pride Month<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: white;\"><b>The month of June is celebrated by the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies as Pride month. It\u2019s a chance to celebrate and reaffirm individuals who are living authentically and support them and their mental health in a safe, joyful space.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Supporting Mental Health<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Talk to a Trusted Source:<\/b> Having someone listen can be extremely helpful. There are also several LGBTQIA+ helplines, including the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender National Hotline (888-843-4564).<\/li>\n<li><b>Peer Support:<\/b> Connecting with people with shared or similar experiences can be therapeutic. Seek out support groups that may be local to your community, online, available through your workplace, or elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li><b>Self-care:<\/b> Prioritize exercise, nutrition, sleep, and activities that bring you joy. Volunteering is also an excellent option.<\/li>\n<li><b>Medical Support:<\/b> A doctor can help you get a diagnosis and explore possible medications for treatment.<\/li>\n<li><b>Start Therapy:<\/b> Speaking to someone about traumatic experiences, difficult emotions, depression, anxiety, health issues, or relationship issues can help you develop coping skills. Some therapists specialize solely in LGBTQIA+ issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Mental Health Resources<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for more LGBTQ+ mental health resources, the following are a great place to start:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The Trevor Project<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> The leading suicide prevention crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQIA+ young people, offering support 24\/7.
