While physical abuse may be the most known form of intimate partner violence, it is not the only way that abuse manifests in relationships. Being able to recognize signs of domestic abuse is incredibly important in keeping ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities safe.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1780072632632{border-top-width: 5px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;31454&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Some common signs of abusive behavior in a partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/identify-abuse\/domestic-abuse-warning-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">include<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Telling a partner that they can\u2019t do anything right<\/li>\n<li>Being extremely jealous when a partner spends time with others<\/li>\n<li>Preventing a partner from making their own decisions<\/li>\n<li>Insulting a partner in front of others<\/li>\n<li>Pressuring a partner to do things they don\u2019t want to do<\/li>\n<li>Threatening physical violence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If one or more of these signs are present in a relationship, it may signal that abuse is occurring.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/resources\/types-of-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Physical abuse<\/a> does not only refer to physical attacks but also threats of violence. It usually occurs alongside other forms of abuse, such as emotional or financial. Signs that you or someone else may be experiencing physical abuse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/resources\/types-of-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">include:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Punching, scratching, choking, kicking, strangling, biting, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/resources\/types-of-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smothering<\/a> a partner<\/li>\n<li>Throwing items at or near a partner<\/li>\n<li>Touching a partner without permission<\/li>\n<li>Pulling a partner\u2019s hair<\/li>\n<li>Preventing a partner from leaving home or calling emergency services<\/li>\n<li>Driving recklessly or abandoning a partner in unfamiliar places<\/li>\n<li>Forcing a partner to use drugs or alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Preventing a partner from taking medication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1780072842254{border-top-width: 5px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/resources\/what-is-emotional-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emotional abuse<\/a> refers to non-physical behaviors intended to demean, isolate, control, and intimidate another person. Emotional abuse is subtle, but no less serious than physical violence. Refusing to allow the use of birth control, condoms, or other methods of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention are forms of sexual abuse. Other signs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unwanted kissing, touching, or violent sexual activity<\/li>\n<li>Forcing a partner to dress in sexual outfits<\/li>\n<li>Using explicit or sexual names to insult a partner<\/li>\n<li>Sexual contact with those who cannot give clear consent, including those who are intoxicated, unconscious, or asleep<\/li>\n<li>Strangling, restraining, or holding a partner down during sex without consent<\/li>\n<li>Involving weapons, objects, or other people in sexual activity without consent<\/li>\n<li>Intentionally hurting a partner during sex or attempting to give a partner an STI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1780072842254{border-top-width: 5px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/resources\/what-is-financial-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial or economic abuse<\/a> involves the abusive partner controlling the finances of another to maintain control and power over them. This can include stealing the passwords of a partner\u2019s social media, looking through a parter\u2019s phone without permission, or monitoring a partner\u2019s whereabouts through GPS or spyware. Another form of technology-facilitated abuse is <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/issues\/image-based-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA)<\/a>, which refers to the theft, creation, distribution, or extortion of sexually explicit material without the consent of the person depicted in the content. <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/issues\/image-based-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Examples of IBSA are<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using sexually explicit material as blackmail<\/li>\n<li>Non-consensually distributing sexual material (sometimes referred to as \u201crevenge porn\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Taking non-consensual photos or videos by positing the phone above or underneath another person (sometimes referred to as \u201cdown blousing\u201d or \u201cupskirting\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Generating or creating sexually explicit videos or photos with AI or photoshop (sometimes called \u201cdeepfake\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1780073335351{border-top-width: 5px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]If you suspect that you, a loved one, or a member of your community are experiencing domestic abuse, there are many ways to find or offer help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find support: Talk to a friend, family member, or mentor<\/li>\n<li>Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/plan-for-safety\/create-your-personal-safety-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safety plan<\/a>: Through the National Domestic Violence Hotline, you or another person experiencing abuse can create a practical plan to help identify abuse, find the words to describe the situation, and prepare to leave.<\/li>\n<li>Go to an emergency room or health clinic: Providers can treat injuries resulting from assault, offer medications for STIs or birth control, and may be able to connect you or another person to sexual assault advocates.<\/li>\n<li>Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/what-to-expect-when-you-contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love is respect<\/a> to speak to an advocate and find nearby resources.
